Nurses—Making a Difference in Global Health
The New Florence Nightingale Museum is Now Open
The new Florence Nightingale Museum was opened
by our Patron, HRH Princess Alexandra KG CVO, on the evening of 11 May. Over 170
guests attended from our key funders to supporters and those who helped us put
the new museum together. We officially opened to the public on Wednesday 12 May
– Florence’s birthday, of course.

We want our visitors to discover what a truly
remarkable woman Florence Nightingale was - far more interesting than the
sentimental image of the "lady of the lamp" and we hope to convey a sense of the
"real" woman - flaws and all - behind the Nightingale legend by focusing on
three key aspects of her long life:
her family life / privileged upbringing which she called “the Gilded Cage” the
medical crisis in the Crimean War and how, after the war, she fought for all
manner of health reforms, often confined to bed by an illness she caught in the
Crimea. We also want our visitors to discover the wider historical and
international context of Florence’s life – and so you will find a ribbon of
images and films which wraps around the gallery and introduces a colourful cast
of characters. We look forward to welcoming you soon.”
One of our
first visitors on that most important day, was Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who was
in London to give the address at Westminster Abbey in the evening.
